Buddy System Always Works

Ever since I started working out, I have always been a bit of an antisocial person. In middle school, my friends and I would go to the gym everyday trying to get ripped abs or biceps the size of car rims. Instead of being a hardcore lift session of weights slamming and guys grunting, it ended up being only fifteen minutes of actual work and an hour of talking about getting big. So I quickly realized that this tea party gossip hour with my friends wouldn’t produce any results. I soon found myself lifting in my basement before school and running at night when all my friends were passed out. While they were still perplexed about how come they fell short of their goals, I was soon going beyond any of my expectations.

Wish I can run on beautiful days like this all the time.

Wish I can run on beautiful days like this all the time.

Unfortunately, just like sitting at a lunch table by yourself, lifting in a gym or running in the dark can be a bit lonely (and scary on a empty road). Since I grew up with this notion that I could only get results by being pushed by myself, I went through phases of working out hard and then months of not doing anything. It soon caught up to me and I was thirty pounds heavier from the lack of exercise and addition of fried food.

It wasn’t until I started dating my girlfriend that I realized the right people can motivate you. This summer, I want to be looking better and feeling healthier than I ever have in my life. I already started going through the phases of working out hard for a week than stopping for three weeks. She caught on quickly and became my personal drill sergeant motivator. If I was feeling low, she’d tell me exactly what I needed to hear. When I didn’t want to get up out of bed for a run, she’d kick my butt and force me to. Not only with her words, but I want to look better for her most of all.

Now that I have a good support system behind me, I am more than focuses to go after my goals. I am running two times a day to shed those pounds and get back into the gym. Besides that, for the first time I ran with someone by my side. My girlfriend and I ran through the park yesterday. Not only was it fun, but it was one of the best feelings I have ever felt. I didn’t feel tired and I wasn’t counting the clock until I could stop. I was just enjoying being next to her. And it wasn’t on a dark road in the middle of the night. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon and I was able to take in all the beauty of the day.

Going from the antisocial lifter to running on a buddy system, I feel my workouts have taken a big leap. It’s more enjoyable begin with someone than forcing yourself everyday to go workout. And don’t worry, maybe you don’t have a friend or a significant other that is into that sort of thing. The gym and running paths are filled with groups of people that would love the company of others. Just remember to find the right people to supper you and your potential will have no limits.

  1. Great post. I am too much of a loner myself, so this post was just what I needed to read.

One person can make all the difference in life. I’m glad you found someone like that.
